Priscilla’s face divides cosmetic docs; what about you?

Priscilla Presley has gone far enough in rejuvenating her aging face – or much too far, plastic surgeons and dermatologists say.

Local cosmetic doctors are divided on the new look of the 62-year-old celebrity, who is currently competing on “Dancing with the Stars.”

If Presley were a patient of hers, dermatologist Dr. Renee Cobos of Fullerton said, “I would recommend that she looks fabulous now and that she does not need to have any more work done.”

“I think that she has had a facelift, cheek implants, Botox, CO2 laser on her face and eye areas. She has had injections into her lips (possibly silicone) that have become lumpy. Everything except the injections into her lips have worked for her, but she should stop while she is ahead,” Cobos said.

Several other local dermatologists and plastic surgeons disagree.

Dermatologist Dr. Lorrie Klein of Laguna Niguel said, “Presley looks too ‘plastic.’ Good cosmetic work should never look ‘done.’ It should just make the person look good, yet most people shouldn’t be able to figure out what they have done.”

Plastic surgeon Dr. John Di Saia of San Clemente focused on reports that Presley and other celebrities went to “injection parties” run by a foreign doctor who claimed that his low-grade silicone would work better than Botox as a wrinkle-fighter.

Priscilla Presley in February 2008“Beware snake oil salesmen … with sweet talk and promises,” Di Saia said on his blog. “Silicone gel injections are not natural. They do not do well. Qualified plastic surgeons will not offer them.”

“Patients who have been injected with substances that are not biocompatible with the human body can experience a severe foreign-body type reaction,” said dermatologist Dr. Vince Afsahi of Tustin and Newport Beach. “This can lead to long-term disfigurement. I have personally seen this in patients getting bargain discounts for injectable products in other countries.

“One patient was injected in a foreign country with what turned out to be cooking oil like Crisco to add volume to her bottom. She was presented to us with severe scarring and draining abcesses.

“My advice is not to shop around for the cheapest cosmetic surgeon around and always be informed of what products are being used to enhance your physique,” Afsahi said.

Klein suggested that Presley should keep going to cosmetic doctors, but should scale back.

“She should probably do a lower dose of Botox than she is currently getting so that she has a more natural look, rather than the frozen look she now has,” she said. Klein also noted:

Her cheeks are also overdone and do not look natural. If she had a temporary filler put in, I would recommend she wait until most of it has disappeared then have a softer, more subtle filler injection done. If she
got cheek implants they should be removed.

Results with fillers such as Radiesse, Restylane and Juvederm are based on the expertise and artistic talent of the physician injecting it, not on the filler itself.

If she had a permanent filler, such as silicone, injected (which is not FDA-approved for cosmetic use), then she is stuck with her current look.

The only FDA-approved permanent filler available in the United States is Artefill, which is a great product but should only be injected by very experienced physician injectors, such as dermatologists and plastic surgeons, who also have an artistic eye.

Cobos also added a frequent recommendation from dermatologists: “I would have her continue to wear sunscreen and stay out of the sun.”

She looks terrible, like a botched job.

Unfortunately, there are too many doctors out there who will not say no to a patient, especially a celebrity or financially well off patient when they want to do something to their face or body. Also there are many patients out there who don’t actually see themselves as others see them. This is called body dysmorphia. While I do not know if Priscilla Presley has this, she clearly does not know when to stop. Everyone ages and there are many things that we can do to help slow the process and improve appearance, but for it to be good, it must look natural. At age 62, you would expect some signs of aging and when you change or reconstruct your face, it no longer looks natural. Less is more, especially as we get older.

  • Andrew says:

I don’t know what she looked like before, but I think she looks great in the photos above especially for 62 years old (if I read that correctly).

I think people are too critical or jealous. Though she I also think she should stop treatment.

Aging is a part of life.

  • mary jo geary says:

She has always been beautiful but it would be better if her face could move and she could smile.
She looks great from a distance but on the close-ups, her trying to smile is so sad and her lips are terrible.
She really doesn’t need that ‘much’ to stay beautiful.

  • Jackie says:

Her picture above does not show how bad she really looks. Watch her on Dancing with the Stars. She can’t even smile

  • Barb Wylie says:

Her mouth looks terrible. Why she would think that makes her looks better is a mystery to me. I think she should look and act her age and not try to look 20 years younger. Thanks

  • Linda Schroeder says:

She has always been a beautiful woman, and I am so saddened at what she has done to herself.

  • D. Beck says:

She was beautiful, but now looks painfully Fake…..

  • Botox does make for mask like features, but the most deplorable treatment celebrities choose is the lip injections. The unnatural, fat mouths are a horror to see. Presley would look great without any of this “enhancement”.

  • Lip plumping with injections make everyone who gets it, look clownish. She would be lovely without any of the Botox or whatever she’s had done. Alice A.

  • paula harris says:

Ms. Presley was such a beautiful woman but like so many seems to have gotten caught up in the terrible fear of aging. Instead of aging gracefully with a little help she has overdone and is now what my teenage daughters call ’scary looking’. She is this years Wayne Newton.

  • Michelle P. says:

What ever happened to women aging gracefully and accepting what God has in store for them? Priscilla looks like she is wearing a mask.

  • jojo says:

botox is addictive as cocaine . to rehab she goes.

  • [...] 1. The OC Register polls dermatologists and plastic surgeons on their thoughts regarding Priscilla Presley. One of them actually stated, “I would recommend that she looks fabulous now and that she does not need to have any more work done.” Huh?? What’s he smoking? Click here. [...]

  • Jennifer says:

What a shame. What was once a beautiful woman is now a caricature of her former self. She looks like the Joker from Batman. Eeeeeeek!
